Thanks to her efforts in the legendary dog conflict between Rocket and the League, and her own losses, she had been promoted all the way from Cadet to Senior Ranger. In all honesty, Genevieve didn't feel she deserved that. Who would under that sheer level of strain? She felt so tiny and miniscule.[break][break]

Still, she knows better than to question it. Today, bright and early, after that glowing promotion and promise of better pay after getting drunker than she needed to last night with Isaac Merlo, she would start the morning right. Coffee in the morning, and two of her own. Hazel the Chespin, who gave the closest thing to a thumbs up he could after he had his coffee black. Wander the Rockruff, who would yip and yap for another bit of sugar in her own.[break][break]

Genevieve didn't mind it. They were her morning workout buddies, and after getting ready in her freshly cleaned apartment, she found her way up the beaten path to Mauville, and finally, at the early time of 8:00 AM sharp, in her Ranger get-up with both Hazel and Wander running beside her.[break][break]

Her Ranger pocket watch said the right time, so now all she can do is wait for the newbie. She offered to assist with training, like paxton concordas did twenty years ago for her. And turned out, it worked like a charm. Genevieve was a senior ranger now.[break][break]

She hoped he was doing well these days.[break][break]

On his forehead, Hazel wears a small pair of goggles that he's playing with a little. He liked seeing through them. Wander just bites at the little red bandana Genny got for her. She likes it. It smelled nice, freshly clean. She liked clean.[break][break]

"Hope she didn't get lost."[break][break]

She didn't used to be this much of a stickler about time. That's what twenty years in a metaphysical dimension that didn't actually matter did to a woman her age. She was forty-four just the other night, and yet in a few weeks, she'd be twenty-five.[break][break]

Weird how time works.

Then all of a sudden, as if the word 'lost' had summoned it. The shrill angry cry of a rookidee cut through the otherwise peaceful air![break][break]
The dark colored bird dive bombed and swooped from above!! Only hovering just short of the Elite Ranger's head, wildly flapping it's wings and slinging feathers about as if trying to scare off a predator. But the act was short lived, the rookidee flew upward and away into a tree out of sight...[break][break]

Then a voice would spoke from out from nowhere...[break][break]

"At police academy, if you showed up exactly at the time scheduled for training..."[break][break]

Suddenly Glasswork's form dropped from above. Leaves showered them both as a the bough of an apple tree swayed. A weight had been lifted off the shoulders of one and was quite squarely placed on another. She slowly stood and gently brushed her hair from her vision to set a cool gaze at the woman before her...[break][break]

"...You would be considered late."[break][break]

The cadet's golden gaze slipped up and down the Elite Ranger in front of her. Her knit brows softened a little and her expression became largely neutral. It was hard to tell just by her expression alone what she must be thinking, but that brief flash of annoyance had to mean something. Genevieve Cromwell might...have had her work cut out for her.[break][break]

Slowly, with her hands in her pockets, she corrected her posture and approached. Dressed in sports wear, a baggy tanktop, and leggings with running shoes, she stood at attention. Her foot scraped the earth bent grass as her heels clicked together and her right hand snapped to her forehead in salute. Could she have been military trained or was police academy *that* strict?[break][break]

"Shion Uehara of Lilycove reporting for duty. Arrival time was 7:30 am, to ensure proper identification...and punctuality."[break][break]

Glasswork's tone was perfectly professional, except for the very last word she used. In which she stressed her opinion, with only a soft, very minor rise in octave for emphasis.[break][break]

"Also reporting...Autonoe and Eua."[break][break]

Next to her feet, reality shimmered and stretched as Autonoe, her sobble, phased in from her camouflaged state to join her trainer in the salute. Soon after, Eua, the rookidee that'd swooped at Genny, landed on Glasswork's shoulder and took on a saluting stance. All this culminating in the final initial introduction of student to teacher...that Genny probably never wanted....[break][break]

If the last twenty years hadn't have happened, the squeak of a very shy Ranger would have sounded out. However, Genevieve was not the same little naive cadet, and seeing the Rookidee swoop from above, dive bombing Genny. She didn't flinch, not even a little. In fact, she remained calm with a poker face she had built over years of time. All but a whisper upon the wind...[break][break]

That wasn't the fault of the voice that came from nowhere, but when she dropped, leaves showered the two of them. Genevieve finally got a good look at her. Oddly cute, despite the cooler demeanor.[break][break]

Had this been before the mission, she'd probably fangirl for the woman before her, giddiness in every word. Pretty, efficient, and so cool! But that died with the good doctor, leaving what was left all the colder behind. Someone who gazed upon her with apathy. Hazel however, hops and waves at the duo, both arms moving with the chipmunk, with Wander tilting her head curiously.[break][break]

Gold meets hazel finally, and with a hand on her hip, the slightly older Ranger smiles. She caught that brief annoyance, but made no note of it. She'd had rockier relationships, but in Glasswork's salute, it left Genevieve utterly melancholic. Like the wind taken from her smile, a bygone era. There's a sadness in her, a smile that reignites at the memory of what once was, carrying a weight to it now that she never had before.[break][break]

She did that too. A lot. She came to Hoenn to make a name for herself. She failed to attend Meteno due to her training, but lost so much in the dog conflict...[break][break]

"Shion Uehara. Yup, that sounds about right." With a nod, she finds her adorable. In fact, utterly so. Miss Uehara here cared so much to be on time, that she made a great first impression. Officer Concordas would probably get along well. It almost seemed like a natural fit. She'd have to introduce her sometime.[break][break]

Reporting both Autonoe and Eua, those were two names, but she only saw the bird. Thankfully, the little chameleon water type revealed herself, and the sudden pull to pet them and call them cute became harder to ignore. Still, Genny stood unrelenting, just smiling in turn. It got harder, seeing them both more or less salute.[break][break]

Focus, Genny.[break][break]

"Senior Ranger Genevieve Cromwell. To my left, is Wander-" The Rockruff barks at attention, attempting to, without opposable thumbs, to mimic the salute "-and Hazel.", the Chespin hops up and down, tumbling a step forward, goggles flopping onto his little neck, as he excitedly bounces. So much life, so much vigor. "Just call me Genny. No need for titles." She hardly felt like she deserved it with an entrance like Glasswork's.[break][break]

Now for why they were here.[break][break]

"I've taken up the job of assisting in training you today, Shion Uehara. Exercise is important, Ranger or Officer, and so we have to keep in good shape to get the drop on Team Rocket or any other threats. Vendanturf isn't too far west of us right now, and Mauville is right behind us. We'll be doing a two lap run, where all Pokemon must participate. Then I believe there was also target practice."[break][break]

Genny begins to stretch in her uniform, with Hazel attempting to do the same by spinning like a certain blue hedgehog. Wander makes her own stretch, paws forward, stretching her back. Both Pokemon were incredibly ready. Genny just flexibly stretches her legs out, and cracks at her neck. Readying for the run.[break][break]

Maybe she doesn't want the teacher spotlight, but she'll do it. That's her job. One day she'd be Head Ranger, no matter what it took.

[break][break] Micro expressions caught Shion's attention throughout the exchange and none of them were the ones she expected. From reading the e-mail to meeting her today, she had her doubts originally...but they'd been mostly dissipated. It was a sure thing that Senior Ranger Cromwell had been through a lot. Her eyes had a look she knew very well about them...

[break][break]"Understood, Genny. I appreciate your effort."

[break][break]After speaking she watched her superior stretch for a few seconds and glanced at Eua. Then moved to the tree she'd previously occupied to lean against it and suck in a breath. Though it wasn't visible, she tightened her core and swung her right leg as far as she could forward, then backward. She'd do this only allowing her leg to bend at the knee slightly. Once she was satisfied with this she alternated. Then she shuffled back and forth to warm up after she checked her posture. She bounced back and forth again to ensure her form felt good and stopped soon after. Shion would just let Genny tell them when they were ready.

[break][break]Autonoe chose to focus on shuffling to activate her little legs and warmup her upper arms. Then she began to cautiously run backwards with Glasswork crouched down and watching. Every now and then her trainer would apply resistance to the sobble's back for her to push against. When it was clear Autonoe felt ready she smiled up at Glasswork and nodded once.

[break][break]Eua for her part chose to fly up to a branch and flex her wings and do darts between the branches as if she were practicing her accuracy. They were always short bursts to conserve energy for the actual endurance run. Like Glasswork and Autonoe, the rookiedee was less focused on ensuring muscle flexibility and more on effective, activated body mobility on ignition. By the end of it the three would wait for the word go.

[break][break]Though, interestingly, Glasswork could be seen putting her traveling back back on. Most notably Genevieve would have a chance to see a collapsed and telescoped version of the trainer's sniper rifle looped to the pack. The officer cadet tested her straps and ensured they were secure. Then she did squats to test the weight and finally stood straight and ready---fully intending to run with her pack on. Then she paused in thought and glanced at the senior ranger...

[break][break]"Hmn...You *did* say all of them."

[break][break]Shion shifted and pulled at a solitary pokeball she'd had clipped to her pack. She pressed the button to resize it and tossed it to pop a klefki from its contents. At this action, Eua fumed and fluttered over to Shion's shoulder to disappear into her hair. The klefki chuckled and jingled his little keys, revealing, if Genny paid any attention, that he was outfitted with some lockpicking tools. After having his task explained to him, the klefki simply began floating as low as he could without touching the ground and accelerating upward at top speed repeatedly. After a few rounds of this he floated to Glasswork's side and turned to look to Genny, rattling his keys in greeting.

[break][break]"There's one more to report. Puck will always be joining us. I don't always include him because Eua and he don't get along...or rather Eua doesn't get along with Puck." After explaining as much she sighed and shrugged.

It's nice to feel appreciated. Not unwelcome. In fact, Miss Uehara here got a smile in return. It's a messy few decades of trauma to unpack, but in that time, she learned how to handle it inwardly. She didn't need anyone but herself then. Those years, she made herself what she would be thanks to those who came before.[break][break]

It's something else. Knowing that a relatively unknown cadet to her could bring some sunshine back into her...[break][break]

Eua and Autonoe were doing their own stretches, and as she's ensuring she's ready for the run, Wander prances the way she does, and so does Hazel. In fact, Hazel does the oddest stretches imaginable; he spins and kicks mud up away from everyone, but showcases his own speed. He was a bullet in terms of raw speed, unwieldy in aim or accuracy. Wander just does a quick happy circle around the stretching Genny. Her eyes on one thing.[break][break]

The rifle.[break][break]

Guns were... something Genevieve hadn't really played with. She'd had refused it before. Being four Pokemon down on the mission, she elected a bow. But a bow was just a primitive version. She can even feel it in her hands again like phantom reflexive muscle memory. She still had the arrowhead she kept from that time.[break][break]

Uehara snaps her out of it. All her Pokemon? Genny rose a brow, and sees the little Klefki jingle-jangle. The redhead waves back with a soft smile. Which meant, Genny had to release a few more of her own. She was only tasked with two, but she brought two more Pokeballs for that very reason. Better make it a party. She releases her own remaining two. An adorable little male Teddiursa with a headband, beginning to do little military squats up and down. And a little Togepi, an eggshell baby, who was now, lifted upon the Teddiursa's shoulder with relative ease. Orville and Wright. The little bear even had a little baby pack on his back, and Wright slips right in.[break][break]

"Orville and Wright will be joining us. Don't worry. They're like siblings." Orville salutes, and begins running in place.[break][break]

With a relaxed stretch now, she points towards Vendanturf Town, and speaks up. "The goal is two laps back and forth. Shouldn't be too much. If your Pokemon are getting tired, get them some rest."[break][break]

Genny smiles to Shion, and prepares to run.[break][break]

"Alright... let's go!" She begins at a light jog. Hazel, Orville & Wright, and Wander all follow her in a line, the quartet of Pokemon waving towards Shion's group. Genny made sure to exercise a lot to regain her former lean athletic build... and so, as she ran with ther mon at her back. Time to see what Uehara could do.[break][break]

She turns her head back. It's a leisurely pace, building blocks to start with.

[break][break]Shion quickly picked up pace to match and jogged along side her trainer. With her pack shifting behind her she was constantly reminded to keep form if she didn't want her pack to slow her down. Pace, technique, and physical strength were on the forefront of her mind in this exercise. It was why she gave herself that extra bit of difficulty.
[break][break]Although she was simply an officer, she did this the military way. There were simply more benefits provided. Her top speed would increase due to the weight, her technique would help her endurance, and it'd be a decent show of how serious she was to Genny. Shion had no problem with the reality that she had to show off at least a little. The more indorsements she got, the easier progress forward would be. It was all calculated.

[break][break]Autonoe clumsily followed after her. It was noticeable how well she was doing. Although her body shape disallowed her the same fluency of movement as the rest of the pokemon, her training and technique showed she knew how her body worked and how to take advantage of it. This essentially meant she could hold pace with Shion and Genny both.

[break][break]The sobble's expression was just as steeled as Shion's, too. As if the pair were in perfect sync with each other in the moment. Even if it was simply a training session...they demanded it of themselves to do their best from the very beginning and push themselves to the end.

[break][break]Naturally this extended to all of Shion's pokemon. Eua flowed through the wind, purposefully flying through the trees to increase her own difficulty. As a bird flying was the most natural thing to her and when she wasn't nesting in Shion's hair she was in the air or perched on something. To her that meant she had to work harder than everyone.

[break][break]So she'd fly between branches, practice curved drill beak spirals, and swoop towards the ground and pull up in divebombs to truly make this a workout. The little rookidee's personality didn't seem to cool off when it came to training. It was clear the little bird was hyper critical of herself and only expected the best.

[break][break]Puck practiced chasing after Eua, which sparked a bit of a rivalry also, the levitating pokemon's training would be his accuracy of acceleration and multidirectional movement. Seemed he felt if he could keep up with Eua he'd know he did well. Especially since this was to be a progressively increasing difficulty two lap experience. Interesting how even the clown of the gang was taking this serious. Perhaps the four of them were taking it too serious?

[break][break]Either way, they kept pace. There was no need to over do it and try to lap Genny and her pokemon. They just needed to be able to keep up and that appeared to be all of their mindsets.

Wow, Shion was running with that pack on? Genevieve took notice to that. Genny liked running, keeping the cardio up. It helped her figure, and ensured her own athletic capability, but it was impressive to see her matching with little struggle, despite the josling pack behind her.[break][break]

Hazel ran with both arms moving to and fro, and little Orville kept carrying Wright and keeping pace with them, though short stumpy legs meant that Orville would never match Hazel and Autonoe, who impressively following suit.[break][break]

Wander was ahead of the girls though, following the movements of Eua from down below. Her eyes were constantly darting to, fro, up, down. Every tree she spun around, each branch, she'd return it in kind by doing laps around trees, hopping onto trees and using them as a means to jump further before tucking and rolling. It matched the curved drill beak spirals. But a dog was no bird, and while she kept up wonderfully, she was not Eua. Maybe as serious as Eua, but no way near that serious.[break][break]

Puck was doing well too, practicing multi-directional movement. Levitating Pokemon had all the luck, and as Hazel attempted follow suit, he decided to be a gremlin, and ROLLOUT to gain some distance. Yeah, Puck was a set of keys, but he had the sonic speed, even if it kicked up mud.[break][break]

It's about the halfway mark of the first lap, reaching the edge of Verdanturf Town, when Genevieve turns to Shion. Impressed, thoroughly so as she wipes a bead of sweat from her face.[break][break]

"Hot today. We're just getting started though. Still good for it?" It's honest concern. Senior Rangers needed to at least be on it for their juniors, right? That's what Genny would be, for the moment. "Let's see if you can pick up the pace."[break][break]

The second half of the first lap was much faster. This was when the sweat really was going to come in. Pace the self, and the gains would be great.[break][break]

She liked Miss Uehara. She was actually enjoying herself.

[break][break]"Ready to begin the next lap." Shion stated in that brief moment. Though her pack jostled and weighed her down, she kept running in place during the stop. She just knew if she let her legs rest now, it'd tempt her to unwind more than she was willing to. When Genny challenged her to pick up the pace she prepared her body to do more than jog. The cadet truly meant to ensure her gain potential was as high as possible and with a trainer this focused she meant to put her all in the workout.

[break][break]So, instead of greedily conserving energy to ensure her endurance she pushed forward to begin spending her banked energy. Her pack shifted heavily on her back as she broke into a sprint that utilized her technique and long legs. Her intent was to begin focusing on heart rate management and reducing wasted movement. Her body leaned forward in her sprint to take advantage of gravity and she continued to hold pace with Genny. A fiery look in her eyes plain now that there were stakes, however negligible they were. And obviously Autonoe felt the same.

[break][break]With the sun beating down on her she'd feel the breeze of their rush forward cooling them off.

[break][break]Eua, of course, took this as a chance to run donuts about the trees temporarily. Then she began her temporary rivalry with Puck and Wander again as she began to weave properly through the trees to catch up with Shion and her trainer. This excited Puck, who decided to put some real effort in and truly chase after Eua and Wander also. For Shion it was good to see them all getting along.

Miss Uehara took that challenge seriously! Watching her break off into a sprint had the four foot eleven senior ranger speed up herself, matching the speed. Though her muscles weren't quite as built, or quite so pronounced as back in Galar's little dream, but the muscle memory remains. Stamina may be lower, but not by much. Muscle memory was a powerful thing.[break][break]

She was adept at this, and clearly better than Genny could have ever hoped for. The dossier on her hadn't had enough for the ranger to make any assumptions, but this training session was exemplary![break][break]

While Orville and Wright were behind, it wasn't by a lot, and with Wander and Hazel leading the show, it was Eua, Puck, and Wander who were really pushing the boundaries. The rock dog would not be bested, and she made sure it was known. Every loop around a tree, every weave around the bend, she would make it in turn. At one point, in an act of defiance to her floating rivals, she began to utilize her own moves. She can't run up a tree. But what she can do, is conjure little rocks with STEALTH ROCK, and make tiny footholds for herself to run up a tree like a spiral staircase. She shoots Eua a glance, proud she was keeping up. Puck too, for that matter. Little Wander was crafty.[break][break]

The first lap ends once against in front of Mauville, as Genny takes a moment, jogging in place, to wipe away the sweat lacing her skin, and turns to Shion.[break][break]

Some small talk to break-up the training.[break][break]

"So. Miss Uehara. You're Hoenn-born, right?" It was something she recalled reading in the file, but the file may have been wrong. Better to get that information directly from the source. "I've only been here a little. Still hasn't sunk in yet."[break][break]

They can talk as they run. She lets Shion set the pace for this lap.

[break][break]Shion couldn't help her notice of Genny's rockruff. Her use of stealth rock, agility, and grit was impressive. She could tell that it was starting to greatly spark Eua's competitive nature and bring out her best. It was encouraging to see. Her opinion on this groups capabilities of providing a solid training session continued to rise.

[break][break]When they brought the first lap to a close, she slowed into a stop and took her time recovering from the sprint. Although she managed not to burn unnecessary energy, she still needed to mind her hydration and that was better done still. Her pack slipped off her person and the hooked water bottle immediately came to the cadet's lips. It wasn't until the cool of water had reinvigorated her that she'd speak..

[break][break]"...I am. I was born in Lilycove." she replied.

[break][break]She wiped her lips with her arm and began pouring a bit of water into her palm for Eua to swoop down and drink. Puck levitated to one of her fingers as she stretched it outward so that he could rest on the crook of her finger like a dangling keychain. Autonoe was abit more energetic and was 'jogging' in motion. Though she kept an eye out on the other Pokémon to ensure their wellness. When they'd all hydrated and rested properly they joined Genny in prepping for the next round. Not so much appearing tired as being hyper aware of their need to mind body maintenance as cadets.

"Born and raised, huh?" Genny smiles, the jog starting to take its toll on Genny. Twenty years of muscle memory still didn't make her Supergirl anymore, even if she hoped it would. Just a memory now. But she had the energy to keep it up, and thankfully, so did Wander and Hazel.[break][break]

Orville and Wright, on the other hand, had to take five. They were new, and Genny couldn't blame them. Orville had run with a big handicap. Little bear needed rest.[break][break]

Shion's own question has her call back out in their jog. "Nope. Galar-born-" The name of the region ripes the smile away from her lips, tearing it like swiping away something she once saw as beautiful. "-but Alola-raised. Parents decided to hop to Alola when I was three. They're retired now."[break][break]

She ponders about Lilycove. She lived in Slateport herself, but her pay increase would let her think of moving to somewhere a little nicer. Not that Slateport was bad, but her apartment complex was...[break][break]

Well. The landlord was awful. She could afford a lease break fee.[break][break]

"Considered moving close to there. Any recommended spots to stay? Places to see?" Just some more small talk, as Wander jogged between them, the pup ensuring not to go as fast as the bowling ball that was Hazel the Chespin.

[break][break]Puck chimed and slipped off Shion's finger before zipping off to return to chasing after Eua. Keyring fae and small bird looped through the tree branches and broke into a bout of tag with a bit of Puck's pestering. It was enough to make Shion produce a small half smile. Especially when it devolved to the pair using Wander as a buffer between each other. The pair, as the path through the trees was retread, swopped around, under, and over the poor Rockruff. One trying to escape and the other attempting to give chase...yet their paths were wide and diverse enough for it to not immediately be obvious---because Eua was faster.

[break][break]The fae started chiming at Wander to join in while Eua's calls became rapid, sharp, and clearly irritated. Shion's struggle not to laugh made it clear this was normal behavior. The pair of gremlins couldn't stay serious. It didn't matter, though...they were still exercising, it's just the context had changed.

[break][break]She was fine with that.

[break][break]"Umi-Gura." Shion glanced at Genny thoughtfully," It's a long network of alleyways that stretch out into the sea. A yokocho, if you've ever been to one. It's a very traditional area so you won't see a lot of westernization there..."

[break][break]Very briefly the cadet thought about the culture shock she experienced returning from Kalos. Her family heritage and her Aunt Mao's presence in the community blunted the difficulty...Umi-Gura and the communities attached to it were every close knit, but also quite serious about outsiders and foreigners. There were times she wondered how her father did it. Unfortunately, she imagined she'd never know...Still it wasn't impenetrable. Once the community got used to you, you were basically everyone's child. It was the closest knit she'd ever seen of such a major city's population.
